Fluoride in Water Most Beneficial for Older Adults

The benefits of fluoride added to public water supplies have been known for over 50 years.  The added fluoride helps to prevent tooth decay.  In the past, most of the research about fluoridated water and cavity prevention focused on children.  Researchers have just discovered that fluoridated water appears to reduce tooth decay the most in older adults.

Researchers at the Indiana University School of Dentistry studied children, adults, and older adults that consumed fluoridated water.  They found that older adults experienced less tooth decay and required less dental fillings than the younger participants. The findings are significant because many older adults do not have dental insurance.  The researchers state that presently over two-thirds of American communities have fluoride added to their community water sources.  They advocate that fluoridated water is a good public health investment to ensure good oral health across the lifespan.
